Solana Beach

A relaxed beach town up north, with a slot canyon next door.

Solana Beach is a small, easygoing beach town in North County, about 20 miles up the coast from downtown. The beaches sit below sandstone bluffs, Cedros Avenue has cafes and design shops, and Annie’s Canyon Trail squeezes you through a slot canyon by the lagoon.

Good for: Day-trippers, hikers and people who think Pacific Beach is too loud.

Skip it if: You’re only in town for a day. Stick closer to the city.

Getting there: Drive, or take the COASTER train, which stops right in town.
