Spruce Street Suspension Bridge

A wobbly 1912 footbridge hidden in a quiet neighborhood, swinging over a canyon full of trees. Free, five minutes from Balboa Park, and gently terrifying.

The Spruce Street Suspension Bridge stretching across a leafy canyon in Bankers Hill

The honest take

It’s 375 feet long, it was built in 1912, and it sways. That’s the whole pitch, and it’s a great one. The Spruce Street bridge hangs over a leafy canyon in Bankers Hill, a residential area most visitors drive straight past on the way to Balboa Park.

Walk across, stop in the middle, and feel it move under you. Then walk back, because it’s a footbridge in a neighborhood, not a theme park, and that’s the entire attraction. Ten minutes, tops, unless you start wondering who lives in the houses with canyon views (we all do).

Be a good guest: people live on both ends, so keep the noise down and don’t jump on it. It’s a fun stop to pair with Balboa Park or a meal in Hillcrest.
