Taco Tuesday in San Diego: Where the Deals Are (and Which Are Worth It)

Every Tuesday, half of San Diego puts a taco deal on a chalkboard. Here are the ones we could confirm on official sites, sorted by neighborhood, plus how to tell a good deal from a sad one.

In most cities, Taco Tuesday is a fun little promotion. Taco Tuesday San Diego style is closer to a weekly civic holiday, with chalkboards, DJs and tequila specials from the beach to downtown.

The catch is that deals change faster than the parking rules in Pacific Beach. So we only list deals posted on each restaurant’s own website this week, sorted by neighborhood. Every one is as of October 2026, so check before you go. We’ll also show you how to tell a real deal from a sad one.

TL;DR: the short version

  • Best overall: Ortega’s in Hillcrest, with $5 to $6 full-size tacos on house-made tortillas from 3 p.m. to close.
  • Best budget: Baja Betty’s in Hillcrest, where street tacos start at $2.75 from 5 p.m.
  • The skip: any deal where the “cheap” taco only happens after you buy an expensive drink. Sorry, not sorry.

How to tell a good deal from a sad one

A Taco Tuesday deal is only as good as the taco attached to it. Before you commit, run this quick check.

  • Read the fine print. “Dine-in only,” “select tacos” and “excluding holidays” are common. None of them are deal-breakers, but you want to know before you order.
  • Check the taco list, not just the price. A $2.75 taco with real toppings beats a $2 taco that’s mostly tortilla.
  • Watch the drink math. Some deals are really drink deals with a taco attached. Fine if you want a margarita, less fine if you don’t.
  • Know the clock. Many deals start at 3 or 5 p.m., and some drink prices change by the hour.

1. Ocean Beach: cheap tacos near the pier

South Beach Bar & Grille sits at the ocean end of Newport Avenue and calls its mahi fish taco “world-famous.” Its posted Taco Tuesday deal for this month: all tacos $3.95 except lobster and halibut, plus $8 Patrón margaritas. The listing starts at noon, and the kitchen closes at 9 p.m.

Where: 5059 Newport Ave, Ocean Beach. Tip: the deal covers most of the menu, so this is the place to try a few different tacos instead of three of the same.

City Tacos also has an OB location, OB Playground, at 4896 Voltaire St. It’s the only one of the chain’s six spots with a $5.50 Mexican tap beer on Tuesdays (more on City Tacos in North Park below). Planning a full day here? Our Ocean Beach area guide has the rest.

2. Pacific Beach: Mavericks Beach Club

Mavericks is a big sports bar on Garnet Avenue, part of the Verant Group, so think sports courts and TVs, not abuela’s kitchen. Its Taco Tuesday runs all day: $5 tacos, half-off drinks from 2 to 5 p.m., then $5 tequila, $5 Mexican beers and $5 margaritas from 5 p.m. to close.

Where: 860 Garnet Ave, Pacific Beach. Tip: the 2 to 5 p.m. window is the better drink deal, so come straight from the beach. More ideas in our Pacific Beach guide.

City Tacos has a PB location too, at 4516 Mission Blvd, near Crystal Pier.

3. North Park: City Tacos (the original)

City Tacos is a small local chain with six San Diego locations, and North Park is the original. The menu runs to about 20 tacos, from carne asada and carnitas to homestyle and vegan options. On Tuesdays, every location takes 10% off all food and sells Mexican beer for $2.50, with live DJs from 5 p.m.

Where: 3028 University Ave, North Park, open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tip: 10% isn’t a giant discount. It’s worth it if you already wanted City Tacos, and the $2.50 beer does a lot of the heavy lifting.

4. Hillcrest: the best deals on our list

Hillcrest has two of the strongest posted deals in town, and both sit on University Avenue.

Ortega’s serves Puerto Nuevo-style Baja food, and its “Tacos & Tequila Tuesday” runs from 3 p.m. to close. Full-size tacos on house-made tortillas cost $5 (carnitas, chorizo and potato) or $6 (gobernador shrimp, poblano, asada and fish, grilled or beer-battered). Chips and salsa are $3, and Tuesday margaritas are $10.

Where: 141 University Ave, at Third Avenue. Tip: Ortega’s is closed on Mondays and open until 9 p.m. Tuesday, so don’t show up at 9:30 p.m. expecting tacos.

Baja Betty’s runs Taco Tuesday from 5 p.m. to close, with a tiered menu. Chicken adobado, roasted carnitas and potato street tacos are $2.75. Baja fish, al pastor and a carnitas BLT taco are $3.75, and carne asada or blackened shrimp are $4.75.

Where: 1421 University Ave. Tip: the deal excludes special events and holidays, and parties of 6 or more get a 20% gratuity added. If you’re coming with the whole group chat, budget for it.

5. Gaslamp Quarter: El Chingon

El Chingon is a big, loud tequila bar and restaurant on Fifth Avenue, with a sister location in Fort Worth. On Tuesdays it posts half-off tacos all day, plus select tequila shots and drinks until 10 p.m. The deal is dine-in only.

Where: 560 Fifth Ave, Gaslamp Quarter. Tip: downtown parking costs real money, so take the trolley or a rideshare and spend the savings on tacos. Our do you need a car guide explains the options.

How to find tonight’s best deal

We checked other neighborhoods, including Little Italy, but couldn’t confirm a current deal on an official restaurant site. Rather than guess, we left them out. Here’s how to check any spot yourself.

  • Check the official site the same day. Look for a “Specials,” “Happy hour” or “Taco Tuesday” page. If the deal isn’t posted there, treat it as a rumor.
  • Check the restaurant’s own Instagram. Many places post Tuesday specials, holiday changes and sold-out notices there first.
  • Stack it with happy hour. Some places run happy hour in the afternoon, so an early dinner can catch both.
  • Arrive early. Popular deals mean lines and full patios after work, especially near the beach.
  • Ask about payment. Card policies and surcharges vary, so ask before you order a second round.
  • Plan your parking. Street parking near the beach and downtown fills fast on a nice evening. Give yourself extra time, or skip the car.

Wait, can you even say “Taco Tuesday”?

Yes, but only since 2023. According to the Associated Press, Taco John’s held the “Taco Tuesday” trademark in 49 states for decades, while a restaurant called Gregory’s held it in New Jersey. In May 2023, Taco Bell asked the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to cancel it.

In July 2023, Taco John’s gave up its claim. Its CEO said paying lawyers millions to defend it didn’t feel right. So every chalkboard in this post is perfectly legal, at least outside New Jersey.

The overrated one: the “deal” that’s really a drink deal

You’ll see it everywhere: cheap or even unlimited tacos, as long as you buy a pricey drink or bottle first. Sometimes that’s a fair trade. Often, the taco is the bait and the tequila is the bill.

Do the math before you sit down. If you’d only order the drink to unlock the taco, a straight taco price like Baja Betty’s or Ortega’s is the better deal.
