Ocean Beach, or OB to anyone who has been there twice, packs a lot into a few blocks: a leash-free dog beach, a weekly street market, surf, antiques and cliffs made for sunsets. Most of the best things to do in Ocean Beach San Diego are free, which leaves more budget for tacos.
The catch is timing and parking. The market only happens on Wednesdays, the pier is closed and the beach lots fill up. Here’s a full OB day, plus the rules you need to know.
TL;DR (for people already circling Newport Avenue)
- Best overall: Dog Beach in the morning, Newport Avenue in the afternoon, Sunset Cliffs at golden hour.
- Best on a Wednesday: the OB Farmers Market, 4 to 8 p.m., then walk to the sand for sunset.
- The skip: planning your day around walking the pier. It’s been closed since October 2023.

- Getting there MTS Route 35 from Old Town, or Route 923 from downtown
- Time needed A full day, from Dog Beach to sunset
- Best for Dog people, beach days and Wednesday market dinners
1. Watch the happiest dogs in San Diego at Dog Beach
Dog Beach sits at the north end of Ocean Beach, where the San Diego River meets the ocean. The City calls it San Diego’s only 24-hour beach for dogs, and dogs can be off leash there at any time. Owners must keep control of their dogs and clean up after them.
You don’t need a dog to enjoy it. Watching a Lab chase a tennis ball into the surf for the 40th time is the cheapest mood boost in the city.
Tip: the rules change once you leave Dog Beach. On the rest of Ocean Beach, from April 1 to Oct. 31, dogs aren’t allowed on the beach, boardwalk or nearby parks from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. From Nov. 1 to March 31, that’s 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Outside those hours, dogs must be leashed.
Water safety: Dog Beach is at a river mouth, and the County says bacteria levels rise near rivers and storm drains after rain. Stay out of the water for 72 hours after rainfall ends, and check sdbeachinfo.com for advisories and closures before you or your dog go in.

2. Graze the Wednesday farmers market
Every Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m., rain or shine, the Ocean Beach Farmers Market takes over Newport Avenue between Bacon and Cable streets. The Ocean Beach MainStreet Association runs it, and it’s a certified farmers market, so you can buy produce straight from local farmers.
Come hungry, eat your way down the block, then walk west to the sand for sunset. Dinner and a show, for the price of a few skewers.
3. Browse Newport Avenue’s antiques and shops
Newport Avenue is OB’s main street, lined with shops, bars and places to eat. It’s also known for its antique district, where dealers sell everything from vintage clothing to old sports memorabilia.
One heads-up: the big Ocean Beach Antique Mall at 4926 Newport Ave. has closed, so check hours for any shop you’re set on.
4. Spend time on the beach (near a lifeguard)
The City describes Ocean Beach as a wide beach about 1 mile long, split up by rock jetties. It’s one of nine San Diego beaches with a permanent lifeguard station, with lifeguards generally on duty from 9 a.m. to dusk. There are restrooms, showers, fire pits and beach wheelchairs.
Safety: swim near a lifeguard, never alone, and watch for the black and yellow checkered flag that separates swimming and surfing zones. If a rip current pulls you out, swim parallel to shore until you’re free. Alcohol, glass and smoking aren’t allowed on the beach.
5. Take a surf lesson (or watch from the sand)
OB is a surf beach, and the City lists surfing among its main activities. If you’re new, book a lesson with a surf school instead of renting a board and hoping for the best.
Not a surfer? Watching good surfers from the sand is free, and nobody laughs at your pop-up.
6. Admire the OB Pier from the sand (it’s closed)
San Diego’s tourism site calls the Ocean Beach Pier one of the longest in Southern California, reaching about half a mile out to sea. You can’t walk on it right now, though. The City says it has been closed since high surf damaged it in October 2023. In 2024, City engineers decided repairs weren’t feasible and the pier would stay closed until it’s replaced.
As of Oct. 7, 2026, the City’s lifeguard page says the pier is still closed to the public and planned for replacement. The replacement project is in permitting and environmental review, with an estimated cost of $170 million to $190 million. There’s no reopening date, so plan to photograph it, not fish from it.
7. Catch the sunset at Sunset Cliffs
Sunset Cliffs starts just south of OB along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. It’s a 68-acre City park with carved bluffs, arches and sea caves, and it’s free. There are no restrooms, so plan ahead.
Safety: the cliffs are eroding sandstone and they crumble. Stay well back from the edge, don’t climb down unofficial paths and respect every barrier. The City put up a permanent barricade between Adair and Osprey streets after cracks in the bluff got worse.
8. Ride the river path or hit the skate park
The Ocean Beach Bike Path starts at Dog Beach and follows the San Diego River inland. Combined with the path on the north side of the river, a ride can run more than 11 miles, past estuary habitat toward Mission Bay.
Along the way, Robb Field Skate Park (2525 Bacon St.) is 40,000 square feet of concrete, open 10 a.m. to dusk every day. Helmets, elbow pads and knee pads are required, and kids under 12 need a parent or guardian with them.
9. Eat: tacos, burgers and a beach view
Newport Avenue has taco shops, burger joints and bars within a few blocks of the sand. San Diego’s official tourism site calls Hodad’s on Newport Avenue one of the city’s most celebrated burgers, and reviews keep mentioning the line.

10. Where to park in Ocean Beach
Parking in OB is a blood sport on summer weekends, but the City lots are free. As of an Aug. 25, 2026, City notice, the City doesn’t charge for parking in the beach and bay lots it owns.
- Dog Beach lot: the big one at the north end, by the river mouth.
- Santa Monica Avenue lot: by the main lifeguard station, a block north of Newport.
- Newport Avenue pier lot: right at the foot of Newport, and often full.
The City is adding new limits approved by the Coastal Commission in 2026, including a 4-hour maximum at the Newport pier and Santa Monica lots, plus overnight closures. Read the posted signs every time. Street parking and private paid lots fill the gaps.
11. Getting to OB without a car
MTS Route 35 runs from the Old Town Transit Center, where you can connect to the trolley, to Cable Street and Newport Avenue. Route 923 connects OB with downtown, including the Santa Fe Depot. Both routes stop at Robb Field too.
An adult one-way fare is $3, and you earn a $7 day pass if you ride with PRONTO. Contactless card taps cost $3 per ride, with no daily cap. Fares change, so check before you go. Our pick for a perfect OB day: Dog Beach in the morning, Newport Avenue for lunch and browsing, then Sunset Cliffs for the main event. If it’s Wednesday, swap lunch for the farmers market. Skip any plan that involves walking the pier, park in a free City lot early, and you’ve got a 4-taco day for almost nothing.
