Octopus, anemones and crabs in rock pools at the tip of Point Loma. Check the tide chart first, or you'll be staring at very wet rocks.

The honest take

At the very tip of Point Loma, inside Cabrillo National Monument, there are rocky tide pools full of sea anemones, crabs, sea stars and the occasional shy octopus. On a good low tide it’s like a free aquarium without the gift shop at the exit.

The secret is timing. Look up a tide chart before you go and aim for a low tide during opening hours (winter afternoons are often best). Arrive at high tide and you’ll see waves and disappointed families.

Wear shoes that can get wet and have grip, because the rocks are slippery. Touch nothing, take nothing, and watch where you step: those little green blobs are alive. While you’re there, the lighthouse and harbor views up top are worth the entry fee alone.

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

Golden-hour cliffs, crashing waves and zero entry fee. The best free show in San Diego, as long as you stay behind the edge.

The honest take

Every visitor wants a sunset photo, and most of them fight for it on a crowded pier. Locals drive to Sunset Cliffs instead: a mile and a bit of sandstone cliffs, sea arches and tide pools where the Pacific does its best fireworks impression every evening, completely free.

Get there 45 minutes before sunset so you can park, wander and pick your rock. The southern end, the bigger open park near Ladera Street, is calmer and easier to walk than the busy stretch further north.

The one thing visitors get wrong: the edge. These cliffs are soft sandstone and they crumble. Stay well back from the drop, ignore anyone climbing down a sketchy path, and take your photo from somewhere boring and safe. Your followers will survive.
